Frequently Asked Questions

At Warrior and Scholar Kenpo Karate, we take a personal interest in our students and their families. Therefore, we have opted NOT to become involved with one of the many billing companies that flood the martial arts market today. We do all of our invoicing “in house” in order to avoid charging higher monthly dues to cover the expense of payment coupons, yearly contracts, consultant fees and pesky phone calls from strangers for late payments.

We hope this list of questions will help you in your quest to find the school that is right for you and your children. It is important to know everything about the karate school you choose for both you and your children. A few other points to take into consideration are:

  • Is the school clean, comfortable, well lit, and free from odors?

  • Are the children constantly supervised before, during and after class?

  • Does the facility have an "open-view"? Is the work out floor area within plain sight from both inside and out?

  • Is the studio in a safe area with ample parking and well-lit parking area?

  • Who are the instructors that will be teaching the classes? Are there enough instructors on the floor to manage larger classes?

At Warrior and Scholar, ALL classes are instructed by Alicia Martorelli, the primary instructor at the school. We also have several assistant instructors on the floor at all times.  At no time do junior students instruct any class alone.

  • Who is the head instructor? Do the instructors still train? What is their background in the martial arts?

Don't let the term "World Champion" or "International Grand Master" fool you. Nearly all karate studios make that claim and how many worlds are there? How can almost every karate studio have a World Champion? There are no regulations or standards in the martial arts industry (as in boxing) so the fact is that anyone can make any claim in reference to rank and achievement. Many were supposedly obtained in foreign nations, which make it difficult to verify.
At Warrior and Scholar Kenpo Karate,  our instructor has over 23 years of martial arts instruction and teaching experience. She continue to train on a regular basis with the top practitioners of their system, "Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate".
Alicia Martorelli began her training in 1983 in GoJu-Ryu, a traditional Japanese style martial art. She achieved the rank of Nidan (2nd degree Black Belt) and in 1994 started training in American Kenpo. She received her 1st Degree Black Belt in 2001 and 2nd Degree Black Belt in 2005.

  • What is the cost for classes? Are there any additional fees? Do you need to make an appointment to discuss programs and prices?

Many schools will not give a straight answer when it comes to money. The fact is self protection is very important for both adults and children and in the perfect world cost should not be an issue, however, we all have bills to pay and the cost of everything is important. Some karate schools, along with your monthly fee, charge a down-payment, membership fees, association fees and testing fees. Testing fees can cost anywhere from $25 to $100. Ask exactly what costs you will be responsible for paying. Some karate schools even offer accelerated programs or competition programs at a much high price.
At Warrior and Scholar Kenpo Karate we will always be open and honest with you. We are always available to answer any question you may have regarding training or price. We have one low monthly price with absolutely no other fees (please contact us for fees). We have an excellent program at a fair price. We also have chosen not to charge for belt or stripe testing, as we feel that this fee should be a part of your monthly dues.

  • Who will be collecting my monthly dues? Is there a contract?

Warrior & Scholar will collect all dues on a month-to-month basis. Most martial arts schools use a "third party" billing company to collect monthly tuition.  You are an "account number" and are billed via monthly coupons to send in your payments. 99.9% of martial arts schools also insist you sign a contract. They will tell you it's no big deal and not to worry about the consequences.
Again, they will turn over your account to a bill collector and the nightmare begins - just because you or your son or daughter decided they did not want to attend classes anymore.
